Is this the last shout for pubs and clubs?

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd's historic ideas summit will look at slashing the number of bars in Australia and reducing their opening hours to break the binge drinking culture gripping the nation.

One of the summit's hand-picked leaders, Tim Costello, said yesterday access to alcohol in Australia was too easy and tackling the problem would be high on his agenda at the April summit in Canberra. "There are far too many outlets," he said.

"Closing times need to be adjusted. The way we serve alcohol in a responsible way, the codes for serving alcohol, need to be tightened." Amid growing evidence of a drinking epidemic, Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital said yesterday the number of drunken louts turning up injured had quadrupled in the past five years. Emergency Department director Phillip Kay said the main offenders were young men aged 17 to 25, although some were as young as 14.

The earth is their higher power and they wake up every day in fear that unless we all work together to change our dirty habits we're all going to suffer the consequences. I found a few of the responses quite frightening – even threatening. Things like “you should be fired" or “I will see to it that you never post your stupid comments ever again" came with an amount of foreboding. And therein lies the discovery of enlightenment. The man-made-global-warming-climate-change campaign is a campaign of fear. We're not becoming a lazy society – my friends, we're already there. We've grown accustomed to thinking less with our hearts and minds and more on computers and “experts". Through the years, we've allowed them to enlighten us with “a better way" than before. We've thrown common sense out the window because we've convinced ourselves reasonable judgment just doesn't work anymore.

Spyware Costs Businesses More Than $8,000 a Year

Safe-computing education and training needs to come "not from the IT staff but from the C-level executives down to the administrators, employees, anyone who's on the network communicating via a PC or wireless or PDA," Ostrowski said.

The CompTIA report, "Making the Case for Managed Services: The Business Impact of IT Problems at SMBs," comprised two studies. The first was with 200 IT professionals, the second with 537 SMB end users with no IT responsibilities. Interviewees came from a range of industries, including health care, financial services, and professional services in the U.S. and Canada.

Frank’s part of local folklore

The Katrina of All Fences

Having seen all three give speeches, it's hard for me to imagine how a prolonged side-by-side comparison will move voters into Clinton's camp. And, as the best-known of the leading candidates, she'll have the hardest time making a strong new impression anyway.

Post-Chait data point: In Iowa, "among those saying they have attended at least one caucus," Hillary leads Edwards by only 29-25%. A year out. ... Evitable! ...

Update: Reader K.S.Z. emails:

The obvious counter-example to your post on Hillary and Iowa: John Kerry. "Endless hours of speechifying, hand-shaking, and town hall meetings" should have sunk him, if they sank anyone. They didn't.

Good point. True, the tryout period promises to be much longer this time--but Chait does seem to have forgotten one crucial factor: the Iowa Dem caucusers are fools! Who knows whom they'll decide is "electable" this time? Still, that only makes their choice seem more random and less inevitable, no? ...
