I know, too, that you have to put up with my Pittsburgh accent that sneaks through once in awhile.)" But more substantial matters kept the bishop in the news as his first year in Rhode Island unfolded. In September 2005, a judge sentenced a Rhode Island priest to prison for raping two altar boys several years before Bishop Tobin's tenure. "While this brings the legal proceedings to an end, the process of healing deep wounds that remain must continue," the bishop said in a statement. "This has been a difficult situation for all the parties involved. I offer my prayers for all who have suffered the pain of such abuse and renew my commitment to do everything I can to protect young people from such harm." In October, the bishop launched his Keep the Heat On campaign, which assists low-income families in paying for their oil, gas and electricity.
No Cheer for Cheerleaders in China
China's 1.3 billion people are crazy about sports, but not cheerleaders. Those women who have taken to the all-American phenomenon hope that plans for cheerleaders at the Olympics will bring some glamour to their work. "I don't know if it's because of Chinese people's personalities or maybe because basketball culture isn't so ingrained that they're still scared to let loose," cheerleader Li Qi said a few days after the weeknight women's basketball game, without a whiff of bitterness. "We're used to it. That's just how it is." The Olympics are a huge celebration of national pride, and organizers are encouraging ordinary Chinese to play a role. Along with more than a million volunteer applicants and retirees learning English to communicate with foreign visitors, cheerleaders also are eager to leave a mark.

Just like the stock market, house values can be an up-and-down affair. But the market value of homes in Altoona is not as volatile as in bigger cities such as Pittsburgh, Baltimore and New York City, according to area home appraisers and real estate agents. “Most people in this area know that there's basically a gradual, 5 percent increase per year," said Richard Johnston, owner/broker at Howard Hanna Johnston Realty, Altoona. “In the bigger markets, home values are going up 15 (percent) to 20 percent every year. But like the stock market, it has to correct itself eventually." Bigger populations and more jobs account for the dramatic increases in bigger cities, Johnston said. Home appraisals are a key component of the home buying and selling process, Johnston said. A residential appraisal is a security tool used by lenders to establish the market value of a home's property.
Semi-finals beckon Abbotts Ann
VERNHAM Dean had to show strong resolve to return from a two-goal deficit in the last 20 minutes of their second encounter with title-chasing Southampton Arms Reserves. In a strong wind, Arms led by a goal at the break and doubled their lead shortly afterwards, but a good passing move by Vernham manager Gary Powley and Dave Davies led to Mark Gibbs scoring his second goal in as many games before Vernham keeper Gavin Davies drew the two sides level with a penalty. Entertainer 5 Twinings/Foresters 2. ENTERTAINER continued their unbeaten run after a hard-fought battle. The first half was scrappy and it wasn't until five minutes into the second half that Rob Burroughs earned a penalty which was converted by Cookie Nixon. Twinings' hard work paid off and they equalised straight away but Chris Knight soon changed the game with two goals.

It might have been putting Tiger Woods last in the Ryder Cup in '04. Who the hell knows. Obviously, it will be the U.S. Opens. I think you have to have some tenacity, patience. It's weird that I say that, patience, because I didn't have a lot at times. I don't know. I think you'd have to ask somebody else that. I'm not avoiding your question. I just don't know. We all love the game. Anybody that's in that Hall of Fame, anybody that's done well, you know, amateur or professionally, has loved the game, to put in the time and the effort, the lonesome times, the quiet times at the end of the range by yourself. There's no getting around that. There's no coaches. There's no sports psychologist. There's no motivators when you're on the range bay yourself at home doing a lot of hard work. It's got to come from within.
FIFTH ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL, Christchurch:
The rain has lessened but not ceased completely, and the umpires are having a chat with the ground staff. "Wouldn't it be ironic if the England bowling, which has been the weak part of this whole series, turned out to be the winning factor in this match? Not that I want to become too optimistic at this stage... but 'hope springs eternal'..."Paul, another expatriate Brit in Canada (Vancouver area), in the TMS inbox "Oh dear are England doing it again, making us all think it's a lost cause and then coming back giving us hope, only to disappoint? Hope not"Andy, Alberta, in the TMS inbox "We all wake up to doom and gloom, and then suddenly three wickets down. Who says the power of prayer/positive thought doesn't work!"Carol, reading online in Portugal [Someone may have done a rain dance since you sent that e-mail - MM] .

Minister 'sorry' for mocking email
A Jersey government minister has apologised for an internal email that mocked the police officer leading an investigation into child abuse on the island. As officers said new information has increased the number of suspects, Deputy Police Chief Lenny Harper said he was considering legal action after seeing the email sent by health and social services minister Ben Shenton which referred to him as comedian Lenny Henry. Mr Harper is leading the investigation into the former children's home Haut de la Garenne, where more than 160 people say they were abused since the 1960s. The email, sent to the States of Jersey Cabinet and leaked to the media, criticised the investigation and said: "My wife keeps referring to Lenny Harper as Lenny Henry - I don't think she's far wrong." Mr Harper said the email was childish and a "clear attempt to damage the inquiry".
