| Gotta love the bump -- to a better grade of service
They worked the system. To unlock the secrets of free or discounted upgrades for planes, hotel rooms, rental cars and cruise cabins, we went to industry experts and frequent travelers. Here are their tips. AIRLINE UPGRADES Use the upgrade certificates airlines send you for being a frequent flier, or ask friends holding transferable coupons with looming expiration dates if you can take them off their hands. Though airlines most frequently award their elite passengers upgrades, it never hurts to be the first in line at the gate counter and inquire about a bump in class. (Ask the gate representative, not the check-in agent, who does not control domestic first-class seating assignments.) Alternately, don't be the first to board; hang back in case economy seats are needed and there is extra space in first class -- you just might be offered that elite seat.

The biggest gripe in the townships is that they want green space -- they want to promote open space,'' Ayoub said. ''Well, here's a perfect way to secure 60-some acres ... and I'm getting all this aggravation.'' Nils Frederiksen, spokesman for the attorney general's office, confirmed that, in January, Ayoub asked state officials to make sure the township is complying with the Agriculture, Communities and Rural Environment Act, which guarantees farmers' rights. Under the state law, the attorney general's office has until May to complete that review. Ayoub farms several thousand acres of other landowners' property in the Lehigh Valley and in New Jersey, in addition to the 63-acre property at 3933 Lehigh Drive (Route 248) where he lives, he said. Where he now raises hay, Ayoub wants to build what are called ''hog finishing barns.'' A pork company would supply him with thousands of 2- to 3-week-old hogs, each weighing about 15 pounds, he said.
How about some jobs for the girls?
Please, let us focus on supporting the summit, and getting the best possible value out of it for Australia. Peter Gray, Lower Plenty Women deserve a fair go WHERE were you, Julia Gillard, when the members of the steering committee of the Australia 2020 Summit were being chosen? Only one woman and 10 men? Are there really no other women who could contribute to the work of the committee? One can only wonder how the 1000 leading Australians who will attempt to provide responses to "the long-term challenges confronting Australia's future" will be chosen. It is particularly galling to see such an unbalanced committee at a time when women are being more and more recognised for their achievements in so many areas. Julia, so many women have applauded your achievements, and justly so.
VA Police Officer Facing Charges
Richard Allan Martin, 45, of West Fargo was arrested early yesterday morning. He originally was charged with drunken driving and terrorizing. Authorities accuse Martin of engaging in sexual conduct with a 28-year-old woman inside his car, which was parked behind a bar in north Fargo. Police say a woman later told people in a convenience store that Martin threatened to kill her. Martin is still in the Cass County Jail pending $500 bail for a municipal drunken driving charge, but has posted bail set for the district charges. East Central Judicial District Judge Wade Webb set bail on those charges at $3,000 bond or $300 cash. VA spokeswoman Peggy Wheelden says Martin is a federal police officer employed by the VA, whose jurisdiction covers the VA campus.

Mickey Kaus has a really interesting piece today on Slate about the one thing Obama might be able to do to not be the black candidate anymore. Here‘s part of what he said. “Obama has already made noises about shifting to a class-based, race-blind system of preferences. What is he made that explicit? Wouldn‘t that shock hostile white voters into taking a second look at his candidacy? He‘d renew his image as a trans-race leader. The howls of criticism from the conventional civil rights establishment would provide him with an army of (INAUDIBLE) soldiers to fight against. If anyone noticed Hillary in the ensuing fuss, it would be to put her on the spot." What do you think of that? M. CARLSON: Well, the good thing is that Obama already feels the way that Mickey says would be advantageous to him.
