Gotta love the bump -- to a better grade of service

They worked the system.

To unlock the secrets of free or discounted upgrades for planes, hotel rooms, rental cars and cruise cabins, we went to industry experts and frequent travelers. Here are their tips.

AIRLINE UPGRADES

• Use the upgrade certificates airlines send you for being a frequent flier, or ask friends holding transferable coupons with looming expiration dates if you can take them off their hands.

• Though airlines most frequently award their elite passengers upgrades, it never hurts to be the first in line at the gate counter and inquire about a bump in class. (Ask the gate representative, not the check-in agent, who does not control domestic first-class seating assignments.) Alternately, don't be the first to board; hang back in case economy seats are needed and there is extra space in first class -- you just might be offered that elite seat.

Barnet students to use DNA fingerprinting to solve murder

Students from schools in Barnet and Potters Bar will use DNA fingerprinting to solve a murder on Thursday.

A group of GCSE and A-level students from four schools will visit the National Institute for Medical Research to learn the science behind DNA fingerprinting.

As part of National Science and Engineering Week, between March 7 and 16, scientists from the institute, in The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, will help the pupils to solve a murder mystery, and will be hosting discussions on the implications of such analysis.

Time for a Change

At the Care with Love training center, young women and men energetically move around the room. Some are getting ready to take an exam, while others gather around a trainer as she demonstrates how to bathe a patient in bed.

When they finish their course, these young people will be “home health care providers," a profession that didn't exist in Egypt until Dr. Magda Iskander introduced it.

Iskander, a radiologist who also has a master's degree in counseling, had been volunteering at a drug rehab center in Wadi El-Natrun where she met a lot of unemployed youth, and at the Center for Geriatric Services in Nasr City, where there was a long waiting list. She saw two needs the need for unemployed youth to find work and the need for the elderly to find someone to care for them and thought: Why not train young people to care for the sick, disabled and elderly in their own homes?

When her sister was bedridden, Iskander had trained their mother's housekeeper in basic nursing skills, and it worked.

How to save big bucks at the last minute

Ah, last-minute travel. To hear the online travel sites describe it, it's all about theater weekends in New York, romantic getaways in Napa and beach time in the Bahamas.

Yeah, right. If you're like most people, the only time you travel at the last minute is when work or family matters demand it. Either way, you just know you're going to pay through the nose for it.

At least that's what I thought until last week when a family emergency required us to travel from Seattle to San Diego on short notice. As I happily discovered, you can save big bucks on short notice — if you know where to look.

Baxter County Quroum Court hears updates on airport, library

Airport officials have taken steps to ensure income can cover expenses at the airport, Baxter County Judge Dan Hall told the Baxter County Quorum Court during its meeting Tuesday.

The Ozark Regional Airport Commission previously had learned that income was not enough to meet expenses, so the commission took steps and raised airport hangar rental fees and other fees, he said.

Univision Battle With Televisa Places Programs in Jeopardy

Jerrold Perenchio, and the late Emilio Azcarraga Milmo, who felt he got a bad deal in 1992 when the two men negotiated the original contract. If the Mexican company, Grupo Televisa, wins and pulls its programming, Univisions enterprise value could be chopped by more than $1 billion.

The lawsuit centers on a program license agreement, or PLA, between Televisa, the dominant broadcaster in Mexico, and L.A.s Univision, the dominant Spanish-language TV network in the U.S. and owner of KMEX-TV (Channel 34) in Westchester. The agreement gives Univision the exclusive right to air Televisa shows in the United States.

If Televisa were allowed to pull its popular Spanish-language telenovela programs from Univision, the company says it could sell the shows to other groups for much more money.

Check egos at clubhouse door

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Top of the mornin' to you. Still rubbing sleep from my eyes and slamming coffee after staying up watching the Oscars and the Jimmy Kimmel Show (if you didn't see the latter, which I'm fairly certain most of you probably did not, because you have real jobs and enjoy sleep, then ask someone or Google the segment with Ben Affleck, Kimmel's response to girlfriend Sarah Silverman's recent announcement of an, uh, "affair" with Matt Damon.)

Anyway, Jeff Francoeur.

You might say Francoeur has the world by the tail. In fact, Chipper Jones has said exactly that a few times (Hoss likes to weave in a homespun saying now and then).

But if any of you ever wonder about Francoeur, or any other young Brave, facing the danger of an unchecked ego, it's only because you haven't spent time in the clubhouse or around the batting cage.
