Space Center expansion plans threaten hot fishing spot

Worry is spreading through the regional angling community that Kennedy Space Center's plan for a new launch complex involves permanently closing the Mosquito Lagoon from Haulover Canal south.

That would halt fishing on half of a sport fishing area so treasured it's known as "The Redfish Capital of the World," not to mention badly tarnishing the allure of a resource that attracts untold thousands of dollars to local economies.

Tom Lelle, owner of Lelle's Bait & Tackle in Titusville, gave a hint of the potential impact new restrictions on this area might bring.

"I hate it when the shuttle is out there on the pad," he said. "Every day that it's out there it costs me $500. If people can't go surf fishing at Playalinda Beach . . . why would they come use my bait shop?"

Space Center officials said nothing has been decided yet but would not rule out possible closures.

Last call

None of the bars I've mentioned are still in business, and most of the city's seven remaining gay-every-night bars have sparse customers for most of the week. (Lesbian bars were never numerous to begin with.) The gay population may have political clout and the right to marry in Massachusetts, but it has fewer and fewer public spaces to call its own.

The disappearance of places like Buddies and Chaps may sound like a problem limited to gay men, but it is part of a much larger trend reshaping American cities. As gay bars vanish, so go bookstores, diners, and all kinds of spaces that once allowed "blissful public congregation," as sociologist Ray Oldenburg described their function in his 1989 book "The Great Good Place."

In New York, the Jewish deli - a staple of the city's identity - has all but vanished.

CDOT needs to get busy rebuilding I-70

I believe it is time that our Governor and our congressional representatives to work together and step up to the plate to get a real solution to solve the congestion problem on I-70.

After reading Colorado Senator Romer's plan, I conclude it is time that the Colorado Transportation Office get serious and get on with the final design for the rebuilding of I-70 west of Denver to Glen Canyon. I've attended numerous public meetings that have proposed five separate solutions to eliminate the problems with weekend travel to and from the ski resorts. I'm sure the the State has spend millions on these studies. At these public meetings, we've been briefed on the re-design of mountain interchanges, the main highway, and the alternatives to either a new tunnel or alternate route over Loveland and Vail Passes.

Cape Cod History

Power was lost at 11:14 a.m. and not restored in the business district of the Whaling City until 7:30 p.m. Officials with the New Bedford Gas and Edison Light Co. attributed the outage to insulator failure at a power plant.Faced with the specter of the next day without a newspaper, an editor in New Bedford "gathered up page mats and news copy and flew to Hyannis where the edition was completed on the presses" of the Cape Cod Standard-Times.(illustration credit, www.metaltype.co.uk)

Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)

Update: After reviewing the messages and our options (none good), we've decided not to post the messages. Here's the situation:

Of the 50 messages, a few have explicit photos embedded in the message. We can't publish those photos (one shows a toddler's penis). We also have a strong ethical policy against blurring or otherwise manipulating photos.

Some of the messages are completely innocuous. The rest of the messages only refer to attachments. Those attachments are explicit, so we can't publish them.

We've also gone through each message to blur e-mail addresses for privacy reasons.

So, if we don't publish any of the explicit images, and we refuse to blur, crop or otherwise alter them, all we're left with is a bunch of forwarded messages that say things like "take a look at this!"

We decided that did not advance the story in any significant way.

CPO Forum: Execs Forecast Certified Sales' Importance in Coming Year

CARY, N.C. — As experts project 2008 new-vehicle sales to come in at a lower level than the last several years, used vehicles, particularly of the certified category, are expected to take on even more importance for dealers in the coming year. "The current projections for 2008 new-vehicle sales industry wide are about 16 million cars and trucks, but the used-vehicle side is forecast at about 42 million units, two-thirds of which will be sold by franchised and non-franchised dealers," according to Mark Mathews, of General Motors. So, what better way to stay ahead of the competition than to learn the latest about the certified market at the upcoming CPO Forum to be held April 7 to 9 at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, Mich.? "Auto Remarketing does its best to help dealers stay successful in a challenging marketplace by offering the latest news and bringing leading experts together to discuss market challenges and ways to overcome them," highlighted Bill Zadeits, conference co-chair.
