Local Gas Station Charging Over $4 Per Gallon Near OIA

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There was a break for the holidays, but gas prices are ready to rise again. One local gas station, though, is already charging customers much more than others.

RAW INTERVIEW: Manager Defends $4.49 Per Gallon

Customers at the independent gas station near the Orlando International Airport are paying $4.49 a gallon. Some of the customers don't know the price they're paying until it's too late.

There are no large signs showing the prices at the station. Most customers are tourists returning rental cars before catching flights at Orlando International Airport. Not all believe it's an honorable way to conduct business.

"It's not fair. It's definitely price gouging during the holiday season," said tourist Les Lazarus.

Even at $4.49 a gallon for regular, most of the pumps were busy at Suncoast Energys on Friday morning.

Not your average student-athlete

Their brief story was supposed to end here, with Johnson presumably finding another instructor at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale, Ariz. and Prudomme beginning to assemble his first team at Grand Canyon University, yet somehow Johnson's insistence on having Prudhomme as her instructor and his need to recruit the best tennis players in the area led them back to each other.

It was a math problem that even Johnson wasn't sure that she could solve.

"There was obviously a huge age difference, I hadn't played competitively in 30 years and was out of college for just as long," says Johnson, who graduated from Arizona State with a master's degree in secondary education. "I wasn't sure if I could go back but I thought it would be fun find out."

If Prudhomme had been hired at any other time by any other school, Johnson would likely be serving volleys with her fellow retirees at the tennis club, but he was hired by Grand Canyon, an NCAA Division II program that had gone winless the previous season, a month before the school year started.

Dollar Thrifty stock plunges

The stock of Tulsa-based Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group plunged Monday, after the company sharply lowered its earnings estimate late Friday. The stock of the rental-car firm had its biggest drop in more than 10 years, falling $9.62 a share to $16.40 in New York Stock Exchange Trading. Dollar Thrifty officials estimated Friday that 2007 profit could be 90 cents to 95 cents a share, down from their November forecast of $1.75 to $1.85. Demand over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays was below expectations, CEO Gary L. Paxton said in a press release Friday. The company will report earnings on Feb. 28. .

Pedro Martinez willing to talk - or not talk - about a new contract

Told he would be facing the Cardinals in his spring debut as a Met, Martinez playfully shouted to Santana about St. Louis' batting order: "Albert Pujols, No. 1. Albert Pujols, No. 2. Albert Pujols, No. 3."

Then, as Martinez readied for his session, Santana countered: "Get ready! Fasten your seatbelt!"

Unlike Santana, Martinez will wait a full turn through the rotation, until next Thursday, before he pitches in a spring game. Martinez said nothing health-wise should be inferred from that deferral. He noted he's always had a later spring start date, even earlier in his career with Montreal. He suggested his April stats - 10-2 with a 2.90 ERA as a Met - speak for themselves.

"I was never a fan of rushing. I never did it in Boston, either," Martinez said.

Groups oppose widening of turnpike, parkway

We cannot support the asset monetization plan until these projects are removed and sent back to the drawing board," said Kate Slevin, executive director of the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. "These road projects are a gigantic waste of money and a leap backwards for a state that's become nationally recognized for its smart growth-oriented transportation plan."

Corzine has said his toll plan, which would raise tolls eight-fold by 2022 in order to halve state debt and pay for decades of transportation projects, would help pay for the road widenings.

He has cited the promised projects, and the lack of money available to pay for them, as a reason tolls will have to rise, with or without his plan. The turnpike expansion would widen the road between exits 6 in Burlington County and 8A in Middlesex County.

No rain check from Hotwire

I called Hotwire and asked if they would allow me to take a rain check for another weekend. I was told, “no."

So my friend and I drove down there in the storm. When we checked in, the power was out and the computer system was down. The “oceanfront" room we reserved was not available because of the rain leaking into the rooms and saturating the carpets. We were given a parking-lot view on the third floor. We went up to our floor and as we got off the elevator, it was about 80 degrees with a very bad odor, probably because of the power outage earlier that evening.

2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Prototype Test Drive: 425-hp Hemi Muscle ...

FORT WORTH, Texas — True to its name, our first drive of the new Dodge Challenger prototype went down under extremely challenging conditions. Days of rain had left Dodge's rental track soaked and slippery, and the weather didn't look promising. It was hardly the perfect day to test a brawny new entry into the musclecar world—a model with the look and the sound of power in plentiful quantities.

Even the ear buds we were wearing under our helmet to maintain radio contact with the pits couldn't muffle the baritone exhaust note from the big, 6.1-liter Hemi whenever we put our boot on the pedal. You should understand that we were toeing the accelerator extremely delicately, picking our way around a slippery, 3.1-mile track at a rain-sodden private track here. On the few occasions we could let the new coupe extend itself, the 425-hp Hemi gave voice in a way that brought a smile to everyone in range.

Texas Holdem: Provisionals, Delegates, One-Party Counties Hold Back ...

But perhaps the most astonishing aspect of the Texas primary is that despite the popular vote going for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, Texas delegates are voting for Barack Obama.

Provisionalizing Voters

Those whose names do not appear on voter rolls are provided a provisional ballot which will later be counted if the voter can prove she is legally allowed to vote. Party operatives use voter rolls to disenfranchise targeted segments of society. We saw this in Florida in 2000 from Greg Palast’s exposė. With the advent of statewide, computerized databases, the job of vote suppression becomes child’s play.

Electronic "glitches," fluctuations in humidity, and power outages can also remove huge portions from computerized rolls, or refuse to recognize valid voters based on name or street hyphenation.
