Only a fool would use a credit card to invest

Unlike a mutual fund, UIT share prices in the secondary market may be priced above or below the net asset value of the trust's actual holdings. When you buy shares of UITs, you typically pay a sales fee, or load, of around 4 or 5 percent. But you should note that many mutual funds carry no sales loads at all.

My dumbest investment: Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. This means don't invest in things you don't know much about. I made a real estate investment in a marginal property and lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. It makes every mistake I ever made in the stock market appear trivial. Blind faith, hunches, and the assumption that there is a solution to every problem are what lead people into financial disasters.

Murder on MySpace

DEANNE BAYS WAS WORRIED about her kid brother, Daniel. His girlfriend hadn't heard from him for a day and a half. There was no sign of him online, even though he usually spent hours a day on MySpace. And he'd been hanging out a lot with that drug dealer. Bays hoped that didn't mean young Daniel Varo was back in jail. All day long on February 7, even as Bays crammed for Accounting 211 and Spanish 102 and took her daughter to the dentist, she wondered where he could be. That evening, two hours into her 4-to-10 pm shift at the Norm Thompson catalog company, just outside Portland, Oregon, Bays finally got a chance to check her own MySpace page for messages. There was one from her husband, frantic, telling Bays to phone right away – even though he knew that she wasn't allowed to make personal calls on the job.

Kotobukiya's 'Star Wars' Bounty Hunter Series

Kotobukiya is expanding its ARTFX line of statues with a series of six popular bounty hunters from the Star Wars saga. First up will be Boba Fett, the Mandalorian Menace, who is the most popular of all the Star Wars killers for hire. After Boba Fett's debut in April of 2008 Kotobukiya will release a new bounty hunter every month in the series of snap-fit kits that will also include Dengar, 4-LOM, Zuckass, Bossk, and IG-88. Each kit will come a special bonus part -- collect all six bounty hunters and create a $100 full size Darth Vader statue from the bonus parts.

The ARTFX Boba Fett stands nearly 12-inches tall in a dynamic fighting pose, simultaneously flying and firing his flame thrower. The bounty hunters costume, including his distinctive Mandalorian armor, is based on his appearance in Return of the Jedi and is reproduced in great detail. The Boba Fett figure comes with Darth Vader's left arm and a cool base -- the bases of all six figures can be arranged to create an imperial logo.

Howard slams workplace U-turn

JOHN HOWARD has taken aim at his party and the Rudd Government over the winding back of his Work Choices legislation, calling it a "mistake" that would injure the economy.

In an hour-long speech to the neoconservative think tank the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, his first significant public address since losing office, the former prime minister touched on many of his favourite themes - the rise of "Islamic fascism" in the world, China's role, the culture wars, the importance of the traditional family, choice in education and the liberal media - as well as some more surprising ones, including an attack on the Archbishop of Canterbury.

But his most bitter remarks were reserved for those seeking to unwind his Work Choices legislation, which many believe cost the Coalition the election.

No death sentence likely in Graham killings

The probable fate of a man accused of killing a young couple in Graham came down to his willingness to admit blame, a grieving family's wish for certainty and a prosecutor's frustration with the death penalty.

Pierce County Prosecutor Gerald Horne announced Wednesday that he would not seek execution for Daniel Tavares Jr. if the man, once imprisoned for killing his mother, follows through with his agreement to plead guilty.

Tavares, 41, would spend the rest of his life in prison in the deaths of his neighbors, Brian Mauck, 30, and his wife, Beverly, 28, who were each shot three times in the head in November and left in the living room of their new home.

The Maucks' relatives said they believed a life sentence -- and having the ordeal end without a trial and years of appeals -- was justice.

THE MOSSBERG SOLUTION

It's fair to say that cellphones can induce laziness. They enable effortless directory assistance, mobile Web access and the ever-important luxury of calling someone in the next room so you don't need to get up. But this laziness can be reversed in an instant: Just misplace your cellphone at home, hear it ring and note how quickly you move -- running, climbing stairs or flipping couch cushions -- to find the phone before a caller hangs up.

VTech Communications wants to put an end to this mad phone dash with its new $150 Expandable Cordless Phone System with Bluetooth, the LS5145. This device synchronizes with your cellphone and redirects incoming cell calls to ring wherever the VTech phones are placed in the house. It works with your landline and up to two Bluetooth-linked cellphones, and can be expanded using additional handsets that cost $80 each.

This weekend, many Minnesotans watching the Oscars will root for "Juno" or "No Country for Old Men." A great deal has been made of the moviemakers' Minnesota roots. Both are up for Best Picture and a host of other Oscars. But how deep are those roots and what would Oscar wins really mean for Minnesota?

I "went on strike" with Broadway...

The theaters let this happen and considering it's the holiday season it's a bad move on their part.

At least I got to spend a lot of time talking to John Lloyd Young! I had met him once before and he remembered me... he's so nice. I feel so bad that he's not going to spend his last few weeks with Jersey Boys performing. I also got to hang out with Lance Bass (who is friends with my sister and I have met him before as well). He's such a sweetheart and I love him! So, I hung around with the cast and crew of both shows for several hours. Everyone seemed to be enjoying eachothers company, visiting with the people across the street. I hope this gets cleared up soon but some people said it could even last until christmas.
