6 dead in shooting rampage at Kirkwood City Council

In a brief news conference this morning, Deputy Mayor Tim Griffin said the city is in mourning.

"We want to thank the officers who bravely and heroically came to the rescue of those of us in the council chambers," said Griffin.

"The business of the city will continue and we will recover, but we will never be the same," he added. "The healing process starts now."

According to a sequence of events offered by police, Thornton parked on the street between City Hall and the Kirkwood Police Department. He crossed the street and walked up to Biggs, who had just come out of the police station on his way to grab a pizza at Imo's.

"He approached Biggs and we don't know what happened between them, but then he shot Biggs," said County Police Officer Tracy Panus.

IndyCar pit crew member also a mechanic

On March 29th, racing fans will be out in full force at the HomesteadMiami Speedway for the opener of the IndyCar series, which features the same cars and drivers that will race in the Indy500.

The crowd will be roaring, the drivers revving their engines and the announcers preparing to call the event. But on the sidelines, another group of people will be waiting for the race to begin: the pit crew.

Glen Van Alstyne is a member of the Panther Racing crew, based out of Indianapolis. During races, he serves as the inside rear-tire changer. His duties include not only changing the tire but also pushing the car out of the pit box and assisting with the starter if the car stalls.

''I can take the tire off and put a new one on in about 4.9 seconds,'' Van Alstyne said.

Today, Dick Cheney was dispatched to the friendly confines of the American Enterprise Institute to try to reverse the momentum for troop pullouts from Iraq. "A precipitous withdrawal from Iraq would be a victory for the terrorists, an invitation to further violence against free nations, and a terrible blow to the future security of the United States of America." The vice president argued against "self-defeating" pessimism in America and pushed back against the president's critics who say Bush manipulated prewar intelligence. Cheney's message was the one he has delivered often in the last five years: The White House isn't budging.

In a traditional political marriage, the vice president would be too nervous about his political future to give such a full-throated endorsement of unpopular policies and kiss-offs to politicians in both parties.

The George S. May Company is going to join Magedson's corporate advocacy program. (Kushnir declined to say how much he's paying.) Basically, Kushnir will pay Magedson to reveal the complainants against the company, and then Kushnir can do what he would have wanted to do all along — address them.

Good news for Magedson. But not such good news for the people who had anonymously blasted George S. May. After all, Magedson will be giving them up. And if they're current employees, they're probably going to be in trouble with a capital T.

Kushnir says he won't sue anybody — he's learned his lesson — but if it's a disgruntled secretary who called the founder a pedophile, it's hard to imagine things will end happily for her.

Kushnir says he's happy with how things ended. But the incident does raise some ethical questions.
